Create a Neighborhood Safety Map for Halloween

Cerri, Boskovich & Allard, LLP
When you send or take your kids out trick-or-treating tonight, create a safety map of your neighborhood by identifying which homes or apartments have registered sex offenders. There are two useful websites that every parent should appreciate.

Megan’s Law Website

The first place to start is with the Megan’s Law website. It provides information on registered sex offenders, including where they reside. The site is intended as a resource for the community to protect families. However, Megan’s Law only requires the registration of violent sex offenders.

When using the website, keep in mind Megan’s Law loopholes before getting a 100% sense of security. The site is currently NOT showing an estimated 17,000 registered sex offenders. That’s due to the fact Megan’s Law does not require some sex offenders to appear on the website, including those convicted of a misdemeanor charge of annoying or molesting a child. So while these type of sex offenders are required to register with the local police or Sheriff’s office, the information kept by police is not available to the public.

Dru Sjodin National Sex Offender Public Website

Another resource is the Department of Justice Dru Sjodin National Sex Offender Public Website (NSOPW). The U.S. Department of Justice recently made the national sex offender registry available through a mobile app, which tracks your location and pinpoints all the homes where registered sex offenders live. To download the app, click this link from your mobile device.

If you are on a desktop, there is more functionality on their website. Go to: https://www.nsopw.gov/en/Search and conduct your search then create a Halloween safety map for your children.

Established in 2005 as the National Sex Offender Public Registry (NSOPR), its name honors college student Dru Sjodin. She was a young woman kidnapped and murdered by a registered sex offender in Minnesota.
